Get this... Housemate #1 wants me to pay the majority of the electricity bill. Is that really fair? Surely, everything should be equal? I mean, I don't use that much more than he does. Sure, I turn the heater on for 2 hours in the morning and I turn lights on when it's dark O.o My justification is: If he wanted us to move out with him, he should be an adult and pay his third of the bills?

it doesnt matter who uses what, you should all pay equal amounts, do equal amounts of housework etc etc whether there are 2,3,4 or more in a house it has to be fair, thats like saying you need to pay more water rates because you use the toilet more or you stay in the shower 5 mins longer, you know what i mean

LOL Exactly, I'd be happy to pay my amount if there was a way of measuring it, but there's not.

I agree with twinzie...everyone should pay equal amounts. It's not even fair for your house mate to even suggest you pay more and I'd be pissed if that came up to me! Tell him you will only pay your share of equal amounts of the bill..period. If you pay this once then he will hit you month after month after month wanting/expecting more from you.

Well I've agreed that I will pay for the gas... because I use that and he doesn't. But I know he uses almost as much electricity as me... and he thinks that we're taking him for a 'ride / using' him because we don't pay more than him... *sigh*

Tell him if he feels that way either he can move out or you can, but I think it is unfair for him to think that you should pay more just because he is unhappy! I hate when people act out like this!!

LOL I can see where he's coming from, but it's unfair unless he can find a way of telling me exactly how much we use compared to him.

See the dude should just be happy to have some help with bills and someone who actually does pay. I have a friend right now who has a roomate that is eating her and her husband out of house and home, probably owes them thousands of dollars by now because he never pays them rent. He's lived with them for like a year and I think she's gotten a measly $200. Sooo yeah dude should be grateful xD

That blows -- electricity is a shared commodity. I mean, even leaving a cell phone charger or laptop charger or something similar simply plugged into an outlet is eating a little electricity, so who can gauge who is using what? It's hard to imagine that he isn't using at least NEARLY as much as everyone else -- no tv or computer or charger or electric razor or lamp or anything? LOL he may as well move out to the wilderness then... :/ No way in the world I'd pay more. If he's only home roughly 20% of the time and rarely ever uses any electric appliances or gadgets or lights, then maybe I could see him paying a little less than 1/3 (or however it's divided up), but other than that, psh, grow up and pay the doggone bill I say, and be grateful to have a roof over your head...

Well I would be happy for him to pay less, but he's not very nice to me, and I don't see why he gets the right to denote how the bills are going to be. If he had said: Mary, can we please discuss the electricity bill? I am not home all the time and I do not use the heater like you do and I do not turn any lights on (yes he is that tight about it), would you consider giving me a smaller percentage on the bill? He also listens to his radio from 10pm to 7am... That's what? 9 hours of electricity use, PLUS what he uses during the day? I'm not petty enough to bring this up with him, I'm just going to wait and see what he says when we actually GET the bill lol Plus I'm going to save electricity by buying a battery-run lantern to light my way, and my electric heater from home so I can just use it before I go to work in the morning - it will use less power and I can isolate where the heat goes. So he can't complain. I think he uses just as much as us, but there's no way to prove any of it. I think he's got a good deal, because we're going to pay the gas for him, so

I have to agree with Cel on this also! As for you and the other roomie paying the full gas bill he should just shut up and count his blessings. Mary it seems like you are basically having to go back to the old day's, might as well light a camp fire so you can be warm! If this guy wants to use less electricity I'd say fine, but ask hm can he NOT use any gas so your bill isn't high? Plus...since he is NOT paying any money on it it's only fair that he not use it. If he say's it's impossible to judge how much gas he uses....tell him, yes...just as it's not easy determining how much electricity each of us uses. 3 people sharing a home, of course the bill is going to be a bit higher than if he lived alone, but in all honesty...it wouldn't be that much different. The electricity is spread throughout the house...not just rationed to one living area. He is being so immature in his demands and I'm telling you Mary...if you give in to this you will be hounded by him forever. (or at least as long as you live in this situation)
